Harajuku Girls

Gwen Stefani, lead singer of the pop band No Doubt, has lead a Madonna-esque fashion revolt in both her recent videoclip for her single What You Waiting For and her solo album Love, Angel, Music, Baby. Her catchy 80's inspired popish tunes, platinum blonde hair and Like A Virgin kit out on the album cover art only reinforce her homage to the material girl, even though it may be somewhat tongue in cheek.

But its her references to the Japanese Harajuku Girls peppered throughout the album and on one track in particular that has drawn interest from a diverse range of commentators.

So who are these Harajuku Girls anyway?

The Harajuku District of Tokyo and in particular Takeshita Street, a narrow street lined with shops is home to these funky fashionistas. Since the end of World War II, "consumerism" and "consumption" have become the national past-time for most Japanese and in particular teenage girls who often live at home with their parents well into their twenties. Their rent free existence provides them with the enough funds to flock to Harajuku every weekend, where they transform themselves into Lolita-esque baby doll caracitures.

It's all a sort of a pop-art meets pop-culture meets Western decadence kinda street where often a t-shirt with a western image like Mickey Mouse can go for several hundred dollars a pop. This constant pursuit of rock n roll pop star hipness extends to teenage boys too. They in turn have opted for the western inspired hip-hop culture of disheveled jeans hanging half way to their knees, caps at all angles on their heads and of course lots and lots of bling.

Often the net result looks like something out of a Manga comic book as the fashionistas of Harajuku compete to look less human and more iconic. Not concerned about what we in the West may see as a conflict of style over substance, Harajuku Girls unlike the Goths, punks and bond girls that came before are not about rebellion from society. No, in fact these girls, like most Japanese, are often extremely polite and happy to pose for photographs with inquisitive tourists who gather every Sunday to take happy snaps of these super-model caricatures.

For the Girls of Harajuku, their most extreme vice may be a simple cigarette.

Harajuku Girls

Harajuku girls, used to identify girls who gather in Harajuku district, Tokyo, Japan. Their costumes is in several different styles of clothing that originated in the culture of Japan's major cities.

The term is not only monopolized by those who gather in the district themselves, but has become a relatively popular expression in the United States. Popular use originated from the American singer Gwen Stefani's 2004 Love.Angel.Music.Baby album, which brought attention to Stefani's entourage of four supposed "Harajuku Girls" who were hired to portray the look, three of whom are Japanese and one of whom is Japanese American.

The Harajuku Girls are four young women who were hired in 2004 as backup dancers for American singer Gwen Stefani's Love. Angel. Music. Baby. album The "Harajuku Girls" have continued to appear alongside Stefani, and are featured in the music videos for "What You Waiting For?", "Rich Girl", "Hollaback Girl", "Luxurious", "Crash", "Wind It Up", "The Sweet Escape", and "Now That You Got It".

Coincidentally, both Love and Music have worked with Namie Amuro at some time, Music as a member of the group Super Monkeys and Love as Amuro's dancer for a period.

Interesting fact about Love: She featured as a backing dancer in BoA's early J-POP career, through her 'Listen to my heart' and 'VALENTI' eras. (The creator of this site is a HUGE BoA fan, and was shocked to see Love in BoA's early Japanese videos >_<)

Interveiw with Love

"Hi, I'm Love. My Japanese name is Maya, I'm named after Budda's mother. Maya means Love in Hindi, Gwen probably sensed it from me. I started ballet when I was three, I really really wanted to enroll for a ballet course in the US. My dance skills allowed me to enter into that school.

But my academy record was poor, so I failed. I was so sad, I was crying crying and then I lost my enthusiasm for ballet. I started HIP HOP dance instead, I love HIP HOP music, my enthusiasm exploded through HIP HOP. I decided to become a HIP HOP dancer.

Harajuku is the place for young Japanese people to show their uniqueness, through dance performance, music and especially through fashion. Young designers gather in Harajuku and sell their clothes there.
There is no place like Harajuku in Tokyo. One day I saw many many popstar posters over everywhere in Harajuku while I was shopping. I saw a huge billboard too, then suddenly I thought, "She needs me, she needs me".

When I landed in Los Angeles a car was waiting for me, "It's Gwen!". When we talked I knew my instinct was right. I had never been concious of being Japanese but in Gwen world I had to be aware of my nationality. It was great. I can express my background through HIP HOP dance which I love most in my life." Interveiw with Angel

"Hey what's up I'm Angel and I'm with the Harajuku Girls. I'm from L.A, I was born and raised there. I started dancing when I was three, like ballet and tap, but I really didn't start dancing Hip Hop until I moved to San Diego and I started dancing for a performing Hip Hop crew.
I first realised that I was part of Gwens' fantasy world when I was in Amoeba records (a store) on Sunset, I was walking down the asle, the racks of CDs just turned into bushes.

Then this maze appeared and the walls were made of bushes. Then I see this white rabbit run by, then Gwen Stefani's following it and I'm like, "What the heck is she doing here, this's crazy!?!". Of course I was curious, I had to run after them and I started chasing her and she was chasing the white rabbit, this other Japanese girl was following her too.

It was just in this dreamworld. Gwen named me Angel, one idea is because I'm from the city of angels, I look out for others and an angelic trait of mine is that I guess I make people realise there's always two sides to the story, I kinda like the mediator making people see the other side of things you know.

One of my favourite parts about living in Gwen Stefani's fantasy world is that I'm surrounded by these three Japanese girls that are teaching me so much about my heritage because I'm fourth generation American, I didn't speak a lick of Japanese when I first started and they're just speaking Japanese all around me. Music is the goofiest, silliest person I know.

Music is very like straight up, like I'll ask for her advice and she'll just give it to me straight up even if she thinks it's gonna hurt me, she keeps is real. Love is the perfect name for love because she's so sweet and caring and free spirited.

Love is always like off in her own little world, getting ready to go on stage and all the sudden we're like, "Where's Love, where's Love?", and she's off like either in catering or like just doing her thing, stretching in the corner, she just has her headphones on, nobody knows what's going on.

When I first met Baby I thought she was so innocent and naive and just, you know this little young Japanese girl who just moved to America trying to dance. And she still is sweet and innocent and naive but she's also very smart and she knows what's up."(http://lamb.kuuchuu.net/)

Interveiw with Music

"What's up, I'm Music from the Harajuku Girls. Yay! So why is my name Music? Ok, I'll tell you why. One day Gwen and I went to dinner at the Japanese restaurant. At the table she stared at me and said, "You are Music".
So I said, "Cool!, OK", cause I always love to dance and I love music very much. I think, you know, we just have a special connection. I was a big big fan of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and TLC.
I learned how to dance from them on TV, I studied by myself nobody tought me how to dance except them and their dancers. I am originally from Okinawa, Japan, Yay! People from Okinawa are like this you know.
You guys wanna know how I met the Gwen? Yeah, I'll tell you! I was jogging on main street in Okinawa called Ouksaidori. I suddenly hear this "Tick tock, tick tock!", "What the hell is this?". Then I looked back and I saw this lady singing, "I'm just a girl!" "Tick tock, tick tock". She was chasing me, I said, "Hell no!" she can not catch up with me! But I had already been in her fantasy world, "Oh my goodness".
The best thing about being in the Harajuku girls is that I love the performances very much so I'm totally happy that I can dance as much as possible. And one more thing, I can appeal our dance to the world of Japanese, it is very honoured. I am very lucky to get this opportunity, oh one more thing, I can be around Gwen all the time! You jealous?" Mayuko Kitayama - Baby

Real Name: Mayuko Kitayama

DOB: ?

Favourite Food: Japanese Food

Favourite Color: Maroon

Music she likes: Funk Soul

Gwen's Definition: ba€by (ba€be) n., pl. -bles
  1. A very young child
  2. The youngest member of a family or crew. My main sqeeze, my honey, my plaything.
  3. What boys say
  4. Hot sexy thing that makes me go crazy
  5. My lamb lover.

About Baby: Baby is the youngest of the group. Angel said; "When i first met Baby i thought she was so innocent and naive and just, you know this little young Japanese girl who just moved to America trying to dance. And she still is sweet and innocent and naive but she's also very smart and she knows what's up."

Interveiw with Baby

"Hey what's up, I'm Baby from the Harajuku Girls and I'm originally from Mishoigarkouoru city in Japan. I had been dancing in Japan but I felt something was missing, I moved to New York and there I practised dancing alot at the dancing studio.

One day I got a phonecall from the owner of that studio, and she said, "You can't stay here! Go and get outta here right now!". I was so upset and got back to her, "OK I'm outta here right now" and I cried so hard and packed up everything and got on the plane. But the plane landed in London, I dunno why but in London I dressed like... with a bra and funny and fake eyelashess.

I also took pictures of myself and took pictures to use for CD jackets. Then I was invited to her stage, now I'm here! Gwen named me Baby, the reason why is maybe because I'm the youngest member in the Harajuku Girls. I always follow after the three older members, who follow after Gwen.

I love touching Gwen's butt and I'm so jealous of her body, she has such a perfect butt and her face is so cute! The most wonderfull thing about being in the Harajuku Girls I think is the great co-operation between American popstar Gwen and our Japanese dancers.

At the same time we can appeal to our public too, in karate which only Japanese people know.
And i think that all things are capable and I really, really, really enjoy our dancing performances and I love it. One more thing I can meet my husband Pharrell! (http://lamb.kuuchuu.net/)

Gwen Stefani

Gwen Renée Stefani (born October 3, 1969), is an American singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and occasional actress. Stefani fronts the rock/ska punk band No Doubt, whose 1995 album Tragic Kingdom propelled them to stardom, selling 16 million copies worldwide.

It spawned the singles "Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs", and "Don't Speak". The band's popularity went into decline with its fourth album, Return of Saturn (2000), but Rock Steady (2001) introduced reggae production into its music, and generally received positive reviews.

Stefani recorded her first solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. in 2004. The album was primarily inspired by music of the 1980s, taking Stefani's work further into more pop and dance music, and enjoyed international success with sales of over seven million.

The album's third single "Hollaback Girl" became the first U.S. digital download to sell one million copies. Stefani's second solo album The Sweet Escape (2006) yielded "Wind It Up", a moderate worldwide success, and "The Sweet Escape".

Including her work with No Doubt, Stefani has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. She won the World's Best-Selling New Female Artist at the World Music Awards 2005. In spite of her age, Stefani is known as a fashion trendsetter. In 2003, she debuted her clothing line L.A.M.B. and expanded her collection with the 2005 Harajuku Lovers line, drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and fashion.

Stefani performs and makes public appearances with four back-up dancers known as the Harajuku Girls. She married British grunge musician Gavin Rossdale in 2002; they have a son, Kingston James McGregor, who was born in 2006 and are expecting their second child in August 2008.

EARLY LIFE
Gwen Renée Stefani was born in Fullerton, California and raised in Anaheim, California, and grew up in a Roman Catholic household. Her mother named her after a stewardess in the 1968 novel Airport, and her middle name, Renée, comes from The Four Tops' 1968 cover of The Left Banke's 1966 hit song "Walk Away Renée".

Her father, Dennis Stefani, is Italian American and works as a Yamaha marketing executive. Her mother, Patti Flynn, is of Irish and Scottish descent and worked as an accountant before becoming a homemaker. Her parents were fans of folk music and presented music by Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris to their daughter.

She is the second oldest of four children; she has a younger sister, Jill, a younger brother, Todd, and an older brother, Eric. Eric was the keyboardist for No Doubt but left the band to pursue a career in animation on The Simpsons. Many of the women in Stefani's family were seamstresses, and much of her clothing was made by her or her mother. As a child, Stefani's musical interests consisted of musicals such as The Sound of Music and Evita.

After making a demo tape for her father, she was encouraged to take music lessons to train her "loopy, unpredictable" voice. Stefani made her onstage debut during a talent show at Loara High School, where she sang "I Have Confidence," from The Sound of Music, in a self-made tweed dress inspired by one from the film.

Stefani was on the Loara swim team in an attempt to lose weight. She first worked scrubbing floors at a Dairy Queen and later manning the MAC makeup counter of a department store. After graduating from high school in 1987, she began attending California State University, Fullerton.

SOLO ALBUM
2004-2006 : LOVE. ANGEL. MUSIC. BABY
Stefani's debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. was released in November 2004. The album features a large number of collaborations with producers and other artists, including Tony Kanal, Linda Perry, André 3000, Nellee Hooper and The Neptunes. Stefani created the album to modernize the music to which she listened when in high school, and L.A.M.B. takes influence from a variety of music styles of the 1980s and early 1990s such as New Wave and electro.

Stefani's decision to use her solo career as an opportunity to delve further into pop music instead of trying "to convince the world of [her] talent, depth and artistic worth" was considered unusual. As a result, reviews of the album were mixed, and it was described as "fun as hell but…not exactly rife with subversive social commentary." The album debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart at number seven, selling 309,000 copies in its first week.

It sold well, reaching multi-platinum status in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, Stefani was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and at the next year's awards, Stefani received five nominations for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

The first single released from the album was "What You Waiting For?", which charted outside the U.S. Top 40, but reached the Top 10 on most other charts. The song served to explain why Stefani produced a solo album and discusses her fears in leaving No Doubt for a solo career as well as her desire to have a baby.

"Rich Girl" was released as the album's second single. A duet with rapper Eve, and produced by Dr. Dre, it is an adaptation of a 1990s pop song by British musicians Louchie Lou and Michie One, which itself is a cover of "If I Were a Rich Man", from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. "Rich Girl" proved successful on several formats, and reached the UK and U.S. top ten.

L.A.M.B.'s third single "Hollaback Girl" became Stefani's first U.S. and second Australian number-one single; it was less successful elsewhere. The song was the first U.S. digital download to sell more than one million copies legally, and its brass-driven composition remained popular throughout 2005. The fourth single "Cool" was released shortly following the popularity of its predecessor, but failed to match its chart success, reaching the top twenty in UK and U.S.

The song's lyrics and its accompanying music video, filmed in Lake Como, Italy, depict Stefani's former relationship with Kanal."Luxurious" was released as the album's fifth single, but did not perform as well as its predecessors. "Crash" was released in early 2006 as the album's sixth single in lieu of Love. Angel. Music. Baby.'s sequel, which Stefani postponed because of her pregnancy.

2006-2008 : THE SWEET ESCAPE
Stefani's second solo album, The Sweet Escape, was released in December 2006. Stefani recollaborated with Kanal, Perry, and The Neptunes, along with Akon and Tim Rice-Oxley from English rock band Keane. The album focuses more heavily on electro/dance music for clubs than its predecessor.[13] Stefani commented that it differed from L.A.M.B. because "I just wasn't inspired to do another album and…I was a lot more relaxed making it."

Its release coincided with the DVD release of Stefani's first tour, entitled Harajuku Lovers Live.
The album received mixed reviews by critics, who found that it "has a surprisingly moody, lightly autobiographical feel...[but] Stefani isn't convincing as a dissatisfied diva" and called the album a "hasty return" that repeats Love. Angel. Music. Baby. with less energy.

Stefani performing "Wind It Up" in May of 2007."Wind It Up", the album's lead single, was panned by critics for its use of yodeling and an interpolation of The Sound of Music but was moderately successful, reaching the Top 20 in most markets.

The title track was well-received. To promote The Sweet Escape, Stefani was a mentor on the sixth season of American Idol and performed the song with Akon. It was an international success and earned Stefani a Grammy nomination. The song is Stefani's most successful song of her solo career. In November 2006, the club single "Yummy" was released as a 3-track maxi promo single and as a 12" vinyl single, both featuring a radio edit, an instrumental and an accapella version of the song.

"4 In The Morning" was released as the album's third single with mediocre success. The album's fourth single was a hybird version of Now That You Got It which featured Damian Marley. The song was a commercial failure and became her first solo single to fail to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Early Winter was released in February 2008 worldwide with initial success on European Charts. To promote the album, Stefani embarked a worldwide tour, The Sweet Escape Tour. The tour covered North America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific and part of Latin America.
Stefani contributed vocals to her husband Gavin Rossdale's highly anticipated first solo record entitled Wanderlust, however, the track "Some Days" on which Gwen sings was not included on the album.

It has also been reported that after she has her next child, Stefani will work on a new studio album with No Doubt.Gwen is a distant cousin of Madonna: “Before ending up in Anaheim, my grandpa first moved to Detroit from Rome. And my dad’s mom’s younger sister’s husband’s mother is a Ciccone.”(wikipedia)
